Vintage Fun!

My son and daughter had a chiffarobe in their room that was about to fall apart. Every time you pulled out the middle drawer, the whole front of the drawer would come off.  So we got the bright idea that we should look at the thrift store while we were dropping off a donation to see if we could find one. My husband is handy with paint and I am a decent refinisher thanks to my mom and her love of antiques, so we figured we could pretty one up if we could find a sturdy one.  Couldn't find anything in Monterey, so we saw an ad for a used furniture store in Castroville and figure we'd go. It was closed, but my husband said there was a listing for another thrift store that should be a couple blocks up and he would walk up and check it out. I get a phone call that they have tons of dressers, so I go in, and what he thought was a Salvation Army was actually a vintage resale shop. And boy was it a fun place to look around! They had lots of vintage buttons (some of which came home with me ) ,china, glassware, clothes, and furniture.  And there in the front of the store was a gorgeous maple dresser with filgree drawer pulls and matching side tables. So while my husband was loading it into the car, I looked around and it dawned on me....I have matching glassware and teacups to a lot of the china she had displayed. No wonder I felt so at home there!!

Of course now I have some more vintage jewelry and buttons to create with too, so all in all a fun afternoon.

Tutu Dresses and Random Things

So I used the instructions I had for the tutu dress and I hated it...lol.  I sat down and looked at a whole bunch of them and I figured something out......why am I making a "no sew" tutu dress when I actually do know how to sew???  Took it apart and restarted it, this time sewing it instead of knotting and I have to say it looks about a 100 times cuter. I can't wait to finish it, but I have a couple of orders I need to get done first....and my husband has decided that we need to get pre moving stuff done THIS WEEKEND.......even though we aren't actually moving until November. But hey, if it gets my house cleaned I am all for it.  I got an absolutely amazing ribbon organizer from a friend though, so I started organizing with my addiction...I mean my ribbon and fabric stocks.  I thought my mom had a lot of fabric....but it seems craft addiction is hereditary and I have it too. My poor daughter...

Speaking of my daughter, her birthday is coming up next week too, so I have to get a cake baked for her too. Unless I cop out and go to the bakery which is really looking good right now.Especially as she has dumped the laundry basket for the 6th time trying to "help" mommy. Then I have to figure out what to get a 1 yr old girl......This is a first for me. I have 2 other kids, but they are all boys. I am dying to get her something uber girly but I haven't figured out what yet.  Any ideas??

Tuesday Madness

So the sisters have been busy, although it may not look like it from the blog!  Last weekend we ran around Monterey together with the husbands and the big herd of kids. We went out to lunch and the kids all sat at a table together and DID NOT FIGHT! Yes this is amazing. All thanks to the oldest, Mal who took charge. It was surreal sitting at a table with all adult conversation when I spend most of my day with 2 toddlers and a school ager.  So refreshed with Ghiradelli Ice Cream from the soda fountain we are back to work.

The vintage side of Two Sisters is going well! We have several headbands in the works, some more clips and dresses. The red birdcage veil is finished and with its new owner, so we should have some pics up of that shortly.  We also did are first little veil for a photography prop, but it turned out so much better than we thought. We will be giving one away at our friend Brandy's Blog once she hits enough fans at her facebook site. They are available at the extremely reasonable price of 20 dollars.

I am going to be trying my first ever tutu dress so please wish me luck. My daughter's first birthday is comming up and I am making (hopefully) a tutu dress and a marabou trimmed giraffe party hat for her pictures. Ordered the supplies today, fingers crossed.

Lots more bows comming up soon as well. I have several just waiting to be finished off, including some cute Halloween korkers and Bows. Never to early to stock up!

Recent Happenings

Sorry it has been so long since we last updated, but things have been busy with the two sisters.  We have been hard at work and new korkers, bows, dresses and skirts will be posted soon.  In addition we have been working on something near and dear to our hearts......vintage and vintage inspired designs.

We love the classy and fun looks from the 1920's and 30's.
Robyn has been hard at work on some new birdcage blusher veils. A birdcage blusher for those of you that don't know is a veil that covers the hair and comes to the level of the cheekbones. They are very flattering and can be worn with the hair up or down, or put at a sassy tilt to cover one eye.  While they can be worn by brides, and Robyn can do them in white, they are a fun accessory in colors too. They are appropriate for church, summer picnics, weddings and a night on the town, and can be as understated or as over the top as your imagination. They are the hair candy for us grown up divas!

Michele has some feathers that should be arriving at her place soon for some feather fun headbands and hats. And she has scoured California for vintage jewelery to use in some one of a kind pieces.

We also are working on a flapper style dress with an updated twist. This can be machine washed!!!  The crystals will all be removable for easy washing and drying, then can be reaatached. All the fun, but none of the worries about care.

Then we had to think of a name for all of this! So we came up with "Not your Grandma's Vintage".  We also have a new facebook page in addition to Two Sister designs called "Not Your Grandma's Vintage by Two Sister Designs" in order to showcase these items which we know are not everyone's cup of tea.

So come and check out our "sister" page at http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.174793365914426.44495.140818792645217 . We will be having fun little stories, trivia and questions so there will always be something new. Right now there is a poll up about your favorite "by gone" era.

Current goings on

Here is the current updates of what is going on here.
We have been busily working on some new items and a really big order in between kid wrangling.
Robyn entered a dress made from her husband"s uniform in a contest over at the Boutique Challenge Group and won the challenge.  We had a comment sale there last night, and also next Tuesday so if you are looking for some cute, discounted items they are there!

We are also currently doing our 250 fan giveaway on Facebook, so if you haven't entered, you have until Friday. All you have to do is comment on the picture in the album "250 fan giveaway" with 4 numbers between 1 and 30.  No liking 6 different pages or standing on your head or anything.

Michele has been busily making some new hair candy using some vintage jewlery. I can't wait to put up pictures of it! Robyn has been tying korkers like mad and they will be up on the page soon too.

Well, better get back to Wednesday nagging of the 4th grader to do his school work....

I think I have an addiction....

Yes you read that right. I think I have an addiction....to baby hairbows.  Once upon a time I was the mom of 2 boys. They have cute clothes with monsters, hockey players and such on them ,but lets face it. Boys don't accesorize and they don't care. The oldest thinks plaids and stripes are great together...what does it mater as long as he wears clothes right? And don't get me started on the toddler.

But then I had a baby girl.....and a whole new world was opened up to me. I mean I have 2 neices so I have bought girl stuff before, but it was mostly "let's go get your cousin a gift quickly before the boys knock over all the racks or become allergic to pink".  When she was born I didn't even know where to start. All the baby stores around us had blah stuff. I would see cute hairbows on other little girls and have "hairbow envy". Then I discovered (thanks to a good friend) that there were websites with hairbows...Lots of hairbows!!  I bought them for my neice too and infected her with the pretty hairbow bug. Then I had to make my own because I needed particular colors, then because it was fun, and now here I am.  Everything is a blur.........where is my ribbon and glue gun??

Blogging

So we decided to start blogging about life and craziness in general. To introduce ourselves, we are 2 sisters by marriage (Robyn and Michele) who love to do handcrafts.

Robyn is a stay at home mom of 3 with a school ager,a toddler and an infant so of course her house is crazy.
Michele is a working girl with a preteen and a school ager so she is crazy in a different way.

Hopefully we can entertain you along the way and share some online boutiques we love (as well as our own)!

Got to go, I have dueling harmonicas from the toddler and the schoolboy and something smells funny..............
